ShinyCoin uses a novel hashing algorithm called ramhog. It is designed to be ASIC and GPU resistant. The algorithm is based on scrypt. The issue with scrypt is that it does not use enough RAM. Since a GPU is a massive parallel processor GPUs can leverage their parallelism to run many instances of scrypt simultaneously, and so scrypt is much more cost efficiently solved by a GPU.
